On May 7, 2016, as the residents of a mobile home with attached garage on Hough Road in Sutton were celebrating a birthday party in the backyard, someone noticed smoke in the garage. When the garage was opened, heavy fire began to overlap outwards and extend to a vehicle in the driveway. The garage and car were fully involved when the first-due companies arrived. A fast attack using big lines knocked down the majority of the fire, but it had already travelled the attic space in a connecting breezeway and gotten into the house. Crews from the ladder company were hampered in opening by a double roof — a flat roof with trusses added to give a pitched roof appearance.
