The Indianapolis Fire Departments 88th recruit class took the oath to serve, Monday February 27, 2023.  Sworn in at 8:30 am, by IFD Chief Ernest V. Malone, 62 IFD recruits joined the ranks of the IFD family.  Two of the recruits were members of Class 87 who were injured and held over for this class.  Under the direction of Division Chief Sam Kraeszig, Director of the IFD Training Academy, the recruits will be mentally and physically challenged over the course of 29 weeks with the anticipated date of graduation tentatively set for Friday September 15, 2023.  They will hit the streets as probationary firefighters on Saturday September 16, 2023.

Certifications will include Firefighter 1 & 2, Emergency Medical Technician, Hazardous Materials Awareness and Ops with basics training in disciplines such as Flashover, High and Low Angle Rope Rescue and Extrication.

Members of IFD Class 88 represent the following Indiana cities. Bargersville, Beech Grove, Bloomington, Brownsburg, Carmel, Crawfordsville, Daleville, Evansville, Fishers, Franklin, Greenwood, Indianapolis, Jeffersonville, Martinsville, McCordsville, New Palestine, Nineveh, Shelbyville, Whitestown and Zionsville. 1 recruit comes to IFD from Cincinnati, OH.

2 of the recruits are graduates of the IFD/IPS Fire Science program at Arsenal Tech High School and are the first students of eligible age, to successfully complete the application process and be hired by the IFD since the program’s inception in 2012.

13 IFD recruits are legacies to the family tradition of firefighting with a parent or relative currently serving or retired from IFD.  Prior to their employment with IFD today, 30 of the recruits served as a Firefighter/EMT or Paramedic.

Other former occupations include Patrol Officer, Firearms Instructor, Probation Officer, Security Officer, Fitness Center Manager, Target Store Manager, Plumber, Athletic Trainer, Farm Laborer, Wealth Planning Analyst, Crane Operator, Dental Assistant, Special Ed Teacher, H.S. Assistant Football Coach, Environmental Specialist, Deli/Bakery Clerk, Aviation Ops Chief, Tax Associate, IMS Client Services Rep and Construction Electrician just to name a few.

48 of the recruits attended college with 34 of those attaining degrees. 14 did not attend college. 10 of the recruits served or still serve in the military, guard or reserves and the average age of the class is 28 years old.

The IFD recruits represent 56 men and 4 women out of 1330 applicants from the April 2022 IFD hiring process and is the first class off the list.  The two holdovers are from the April 2020 process.

The 88th IFD class make-up is 39 White Males, 10 Black Males, 3 Hispanic Males, 1 Asian Male, 4 dual race Males, 4 White Females, 1 Asian Female.
