The Clifton and Paterson dispatch centers began to receive multiple 911 calls reporting a fire at the end of Broad Street on the border of the two cities. Paterson Battalion 1 reported a large column visible en route. Clifton Engine 2 was first to arrive to find a large exterior fire at a recycling center that had extended into the warehouse and already extended through the roof. A second alarm was struck on arrival. All Clifton companies responded to the scene as Paterson operated with four engines and two ladders along with a Passaic tower ladder. Multiple handlines were stretched to the interior and exterior along with Blitz fires and 2-1/2 inch handlines. Over 1500 Feet of LDH was laid out along surrounding streets as multiple dead hydrants were found in the area. Companies remained on scene throughout the night as the fire had become deep seated within the bales of recycled material. Heavy-duty equipment was brought in to pull apart the burning material.
