On July 4, 2023, North Plainfield firefighters arrived to find heavy smoke showing from the top floor of a vacant dwelling on Myrtle Avenue. Multiple alarms were transmitted as a result of the heat and humidity. Firefighters chased the fire throughout the top floor and void spaces before bringing the fire under control within an hour. The fire eventually went to three alarms. The cause of the fire was believed to be a lightning strike.
