Firefighters responded to the 100 block of Florence Place for a structure fire. Heavy fire had already taken possession of the C side of a single-story wood frame. Command was immediately advised of occupants trapped. Firefighters were directed to side A where a female occupant was located at a basement window trapped by fire. A neighbor, South Plainfield firefighters and police, and an off-duty Plainfield firefighter worked to remove the victim as the window above blew out and the fire flashed over on top of the rescuers. The victim was handed off to EMS. Engine 5 stretched a line and attempted to fight their way into the first floor in a second rescue attempt, but were forced back due to the heat and volume of fire. A second alarm was transmitted bringing an engine from Plainfield and a truck from New Market. Three additional handlines were put into service to protect side B exposure. Two propane tanks vented and pushed the fire up into the attic. Truck 7 members setup on side A and laddered the building. A primary search of the first floor located a victim. Fire units continued to battle the blaze and finally brought the fire under control. Five minor injuries were reported to firefighters and all were treated on scene.
