The Northport Fire Department was called by National Grid to battle a challenging rooftop fire on one of the boiler units at the Northport Power Station on July 11, 2020. Firefighters with equipment had to climb up 200 feet (20 stories) through interior metal staircases and blistering heat and humidity to reach the fire. Chief Dennis Sheridan requested mutual aid from Centerport, East Northport, Eaton’s Neck, Kings Park, Greenlawn, Halesite and Commack for additional crews, which were rotated during the operation. Suffolk FRES assisted with their MERV unit for firefighter rehab. The roof sustained significant damage from the fire, which was being investigated by the Suffolk Police Arson Squad and Huntington Town Fire Marshal
