At 1400 on April 3, 2024, the Sayville Fire Department received an alarm for a structure fire on Astor Drive. Before units arrived, a neighbor noticed smoke coming from the house and found the teenage son of the owner hanging out the second-floor window, retrieved a ladder and rescued the young man. Sayville units began arriving and were met with heavy fire conditions on the first and second floors. First Assistant Chief Ryan Quarte established command, assisted by ex-Chief Don Corkery. The first engine tretched two lines. Roof operations were suspended due to the integrity of the roof and soon a master stream operation was put in place. Mutual aid came from West Sayville, Bayport, Bluepoint, Bohemia, East Islip, Islip, Lakeland, Ronkonkoma, Holbrook, North Patchogue and Patchogue; Sayville Community Ambulance provided EMS support. It was learned that the homeowner’s pet had died and that three members needed medical attention. The Arson Squad, Town of Islip Fire Marshal and the Red Cross all responded.
