Funeral services for ex-Chief James McDermott, who served as Chief Engineer of the Lynbrook Fire Department from 2005-2006 and again from 2015 to 2016, was held at Our Lady of Peach Church in Lynbrook on August 30, 2016.

Ex-Chief McDermott, age 55, passed away unexpectedly. He is the only Lynbrook firefighter to be elected to serve a second term as chief in the 115-year history of the department. He was a member of Rescue Hook, Ladder and Bucket Company No. 1 since 1980. Ex-Chief McDermott was formerly a New York City Police Officer who retired as a Sergeant in 1995. NYPD officers were in attendance and carried the coffin into and out of the church while a pumper, borrowed from the Elmont Fire Department, was used as a hearse.

After the church services he was honored with four tower arches en route to the cemetery.  McDermott is survived by seven siblings, three children and a grandson.
