On the afternoon of October 4, 2023, the Waxhaw Volunteer Fire Department (WVFD) responded for a call of a landscaper who fell down an embankment from a sidewalk. Firefighters WVFD Engine 180 arrived and found the landscaper 20-feet down in a wooded area. Due to significant injuries Union EMS requested a MedCenter Medevac. Under the command of WVFD Assistant Chief William Davis, and the assistance of Waxhaw police officers, firefighters from Engine 180, Tower 18 and Rescue 18 began a Long-Haul/Short Haul technical rescue operation utilizing Tower 18. After about 20 minutes the patient was brought to street level and transferred to an LZ at nearby Atrium Waxhaw ER. The patient was airlifted to a trauma center in Charlotte with critical injuries.
