On May 7, 2023, just after midnight, Charlotte Fire Alarm received multiple 911 calls reporting a fully involved house fire on Abbey Hill Lane. Engine 24 arrived within minutes and confirmed heavy fire throughout a large two-story residence. Firefighters immediately encountered a male with a large area of second and third degree burns to the hands and face, and requested EMS. Firefighters stretched multiple handlines on an initial fire attack. Battalion 5 assumed command and took the operation to a defensive mode due to a heavy volume of fire. A ladder pipe and multiple deck guns were put in operation. The fire was placed under control within 62 minutes by 30 Charlotte firefighters. Mecklenburg County EMS transported the burn victim to the trauma center at Atrium with life-threatening injuries. A second person was transported to the same hospital with minor injuries.
