Ex-Captain John ‘Jack’ Gallagher of the Hauppauge Fire Department passed away peacefully on November 21, 2023, at the age of 88.

Jack, also lovingly known as ‘Big Daddy,’ was a dedicated member of the Hauppauge Fire Department who proudly helped his community for 52 years. He served as Captain of Engine Company 4. He was a certified EMT, President of the Hauppauge Fire Department Benevolent Association from 2017 until 2020, and he was a member of the Suffolk County Firefighters Emerald Society. He was named Hauppauge Firefighter of the Year in 1978, 1987 and 1991

Jack will be remembered for the many good things he did in life. He was a friend and a mentor to many. He had the best sense of humor and he always had a big smile on his face. He was 37 when he volunteered to become a firefighter with the Hauppauge Fire Department and he excelled at firefighting. He was a quick learner and was never hesitant to pass his knowledge on to younger members. Jack’s passing has left a huge hole in the hearts of those who called him friend. There is no doubt that he has joined God’s volunteers and he is probably challenging the angels to keep up with his pull ups. May he forever rest in peace.
