On April 27, 2016, Charlton firefighters were alerted for a structure fire on Dresser Hill Road (Rt. 31). The fire, which was discovered by a passerby, was located in a one-story addition that was attached to a very large and historic two-story farmhouse at the corner of Dresser Hill Road and Schoolhouse Road. The occupant of the house was able to flee his home without incident. First-due Charlton firefighters arrived to find a heavy, wind driven fire consuming the attached shed, threatening the farmhouse. Lines were stretched and entry was made between the two structures, and hose crews effectively cut off the fire before it could spread to the dwelling. The initial response included several engine/tankers, as the location was outside Charlton’s hydrant district. The fire eventually went to three alarms. Also responding were Dudley, Southbridge, Webster, Spencer, and Sturbridge, while Leicester covered.
