On August 27, 2016, the City of Northfield Fire Department was dispatched to report of a possible structure fire with smoke coming from a residence, and a possible person trapped, in the 2200 block of Bay Drive. Deputy Chief Scott Goodman arrived and requested the Somers Point (FAST) and the City of Pleasantville on mutual aid. The structure was a single-story wood frame ranch with exposure on the D side. Northfield Chief Bruce Cummings arrived and established command. The largest amount of flames were noted on the C side of structure with the roof having collapsed in the rear. Command reported pressurized containers on the back porch were venting and burning. Northfield Assistant Chief Lauren Crooks arrived and formed a primary search team. Firefighters continued with primary searches until an evacuation signal was given due to further collapse. Additional mutual aid came from the City of Linwood. Upon re-entering structure, a search revealed a deceased occupant in a rear bedroom. Additional companies came from Cardiff, Bargaintown, Mays Landing and Scullville. Additional responding agencies were the American Red Cross, Atlantic City Electric and South Jersey Gas and Southern Regional Medical Examiner’s Office. The fire was under investigation by the Atlantic County Prosecutor’s office, assisted by the Northfield Fire Prevention and Police Depts.
