West Hempfield Fire Rescue was dispatched to a house fire on Todd Lane in West Hempfield Township on July 7, 2016. Arriving firefighters found the home engulfed in flames. Once the fire was extinguished, a 46-year-old male was found dead in an upstairs bedroom, said Township Police Chief Mark Pugliese. The blaze destroyed the house in which he lived alone. State police fire marshals classified the fire as arson, Pugliese said, but the cause and manner of death were under investigation. A propane tank inside the garage exploded, causing a loud boom that woke neighbors, Pugliese said. Part of the propane tank was found nearly a block away. Several paint cans also exploded. No one was struck by any debris and no other injuries were reported, said Pugliese. The intense fire melted the vinyl siding off a neighbor’s home. Shingles on a shed on another neighboring property sustained heat damage.
