On May 23, 2016, the Fairfield Fire Department responded to a house fire on Ralph Drive. Units arrived to find a working fire in the attached garage of the large 2-1/2 story private dwelling, with fire extending into the second floor and attic. Mutual aid came from West Caldwell, Cedar Grove, Verona and North Caldwell. As conditions deteriorated, and with heavy fire in the attic, command pulled all members out and units switched to an exterior defensive attack with a tower ladder and numerous handlines as heavy fire broke through the roof. After approximately 30 minutes the bulk of the fire was knocked down and members re-entered the building to hit hot spots and overhaul. At least one firefighter was treated by EMS.
