Elevator Rescue Via Shaft

Not every elevator rescue is as simple as opening the doors. Late on a recent Thursday night into Friday morning, Cleveland Division of Fire crews responded to Terminal Tower for an occupant trapped in an elevator within a blind section of the elevator shaft. With no normal floor access to the elevator, Technical Rescue 1, with assistance from the Tower 1 crew, conducted a rope-based pickoff rescue. A rescuer accessed and secured the occupant into the rescue system, and both were raised approximately five stories through the shaft and removed through the top of the elevator.
