The Dix Hills Fire Department was saddened by the loss of ex-Captain Buddy E. Byrne, 53, who answered his last alarm on August 14, 2016. Buddy joined the department in 1987 and served as Lieutenant and Captain of Company Two at Headquarters. He had several years of prior service with the Huntington Manor FD.

Buddy loved being a firefighter and officer, training the new members and taking them under his wing. He was very proficient in the use of heavy rescue extrication tools, and knew the best way to open a wrecked car to safely remove a trapped victim. Buddy was also a former EMT on the Dix Hills Rescue Squad, and was active with fundraising events and the fund drive.

Buddy owned and operated car repair and muffler shops, and had a lifelong interest in cars. He was good friends and neighbors with fellow Dix Hills and FDNY firefighter Terry Farrell, who died at the World Trade Center on 9/11. “Buddy had a heart of gold. He would do anything to help anyone, and would literally give you the shirt off his back,” said ex-Chief Joey D’Alessandro who was Buddy’s best friend.

Wake services were held at fire headquarters, with the funeral at St. Matthews RC Church in Dix Hills. Burial was at Pinelawn Cemetery. Buddy is survived by his wife Katie, and daughters Karen, Kelly and Kasey.
