TECHNICAL RESCUE ON 664 NORTH BOUND IN SUFFOLK

SUFFOLK, Virginia (August 15, 2023): Suffolk Fire & Rescue and Virginia State Police
responded to Interstate 664 North Bound at the South embankment of the Northbound bridge
span for a reported vehicle in the water. Emergency Communications dispatched the incident
at 05:57 a.m.

Battalion 2 and Ladder 11 arrived at 06:06 a.m. and found a single vehicle overturned in the
water, approximately 50 feet from the shore. One patient was out of the vehicle and in the
water as firefighters and medics made it into the water to provide initial medical care. Two
bystanders were also in the water, but not involved in the incident and stopped to assist the
driver of the overturned vehicle. Due to the location in the water and the steep rocky
embankment, a technical rescue was initiated to rescue the driver. Fire Boats and zodiacs from
Suffolk Fire & Rescue and the Newport News Fire Department accessed the patient from the
water and the patient was moved to Suffolk Fire Boat 1 and delivered to a medic unit at a
nearby marina. The patient was transported to a local hospital in serious condition.

Virginia State Police is investigating the cause of the crash. Assisting Suffolk Fire & Rescue
and Virginia State Police was Newport News Fire Department, the United States Coast Guard,
Virginia Marine Resource Commission, Virginia Department of Emergency Management,
Virginia Port Authority, and Virginia Department of Transportation.

Responding units included Suffolk Fire & Rescue: Car 1, Battalion 2, Battalion 3, Engine 25,
Engine 5, Ladder 11, Rescue 1, Medic 5, Medic 10, EMS 2, Safety 1, and Fire Boat 1, Zodiac
5, Zodiac 1, and Utility 1 and 5. Newport New Fire Department: Battalion 1, EMS 1, Medic 1,
Medic 2, Zodiac (SRT) 2, and Safety 1.
