Kenneth H. Johnson of the Center Moriches Fire Department answered his last alarm on January 9, 2024, at the age of 92. He joined the Center Moriches Fire Department in 1949 and was active for almost 72 of his 75 years as a member. He had served his Country as a United States Marine from 1950 to 1953, fighting in the Korean War as a machine gunner in the First Marine Division. In the Fire Department Ken had served as a Lieutenant, Captain twice, Assistant Chief for 4 years and Chief of Department (1974 to 1976).  Ken had worked at the Center Moriches Fire District as a Night Watchman and Radio Operator for many years. Ken was elected as a Fire Commissioner from 2011 to 2015 and was very active in numerous fire service organizations and Juniors programs. He served as President of the Nassau Suffolk Juniors Association, President of the Brookhaven Town Fire Chiefs Council, Secretary of Suffolk County Fire Chiefs Council, a member of the New York State Fire Chiefs Association.  Ken had also served on the Suffolk County Fire Advisory Board and was instrumental in the drafting legislation that lead to the creation of todays, Suffolk County Department of Fire Rescue and Emergency Services (FRES), where he then served as a member of the Suffolk County FRES Commission.

Ken is survived by his wife of 68 years, Grace, his brother Robert, children, Kenneth, Kim, Scott and Shaun, and had raised his granddaughter Jennifer as his fifth child. He was a proud Poppie to his 6 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren. Funeral Services were held on January 27 from the Episcopal Church of St. John the Baptist and interment in the Mt. Pleasant Cemetery, Center Moriches.
