On February 4, 2017, firefighters responded to a structure fire in a four-story apartment building at the corner of Springfield and Boyden Avenues in the Township of Maplewood. On arrival the structure was fully involved and a third alarm was called. A special request went out for Millburn Tower Ladder 5-2. Throughout the morning, mutual aid from across Essex and Union counties responded to assist with the massive blaze. Seven ladders, a deck gun, multiple handlines and blitz guns were employed to bring the fire under control. The four-story complex collapsed to a single-story pile of rubble within 20 minutes. The fire was declared under control in around four hours, but companies remained on scene for the rest of the day.
