Fair Lawn firefighters made a gruesome discovery shortly before midnight on June 1, 2016, after a caller alerted Fair Lawn Police that their neighbor’s home was on fire. Firefighters were met with a heavy smoke condition from a two-story home and confirmed an entrapment on the second floor. As firefighters stretched lines into the home and initiated searches, a deceased male was located on the first floor with a gunshot wound. Two additional victims with gunshot wounds were located on the second floor. Companies also encountered a heavy fire condition on the second floor extending into the attic and through the roof. The roof was quickly opened up and with three handlines in operation, the main body of fire was knocked down in less than 20 minutes. The fire was declared under control in an hour. According to the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office, the elderly couple in their 70s who owned the home were killed by their son, who then killed himself. The actual cause of the fire was under investigation. One firefighter was transported to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
