On June 18, 2016, Bayonne firefighters responded to Avenue C and found heavy fire in the rear of a two- and three-story building, housing a laundromat on the first floor and apartments above. A second alarm was transmitted and then, with heavy fire in the walls and in the cockloft, third and fourth alarms were requested, bringing mutual aid from Jersey City, North Hudson Fire/Rescue, Kearny and Hoboken. As conditions deteriorated, command ordered an evacuation and exterior streams were set up. With companies heavily engaged and without warning, a portion of the roof collapsed in the rear of the two-story section, causing the mansard roof to collapse on several firefighters operating underneath. Two firefighters were briefly trapped but quickly removed and transported to the hospital with serious but non life-threatening injuries. A fifth alarm was requested which brought a task force from Essex County into the city for coverage. The fire displaced 45 residents; five were transported.
