On April 28, 2024, just under 100 female junior firefighters from all over New York State gathered at the Nassau County Fire Service Academy for the 1st annual “Youth Women in the Fire Service Day.” This female-led event, organized by the Nassau County Junior Firefighters Association, aimed to show different aspects of the fire service to young women who are already junior firefighters. In the first part of the day, the juniors sat and listened to a series of speakers, all of who are either current or ex-chiefs. During the second part of the day, they got to participate in hands-on training where they learned skills like vehicle extrication, operating fire extinguishers, forcible entry and EMS. In the end, each young woman left with new skills which they can apply to their future careers in the fire service.
