IFD/IMPD Fire Investigations on scene

10 occupants displaced and 16 units destroyed after heavy fire breaks out at 7149 Shrewsbury Lane in the Meridian South Apartments.  7 of the 16 units were vacant.  IFD and Pike Twp. Firefighters arrived to find heavy fire showing from the attic space of the two story building. As crews tried to establish a fast attack water supply – utilizing the red private hydrants inside the complex – they were met with one hydrant completely inoperable and one hydrant with critically low pressure.  Additional incoming units utilized the teal citizens energy hydrants, outside the complex, to establish a sufficient water supply – but not before the fire took hold and ripped through the common attic space along the entire structure.

Command ordered defensive operations only. Multiple handlines and master streams brought the fire under control in 1 hour with no injuries. IFD victims assistance worked with Red Cross and apartment management for shelter. 4 pets were brought out by firefighters with one – an injured kitten – taken to Noah’s Animal hospital for treatment. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
