Pre-Parade Fire Knocked Down in Terryville

On July 5, 2010, a few hours before the Port Jefferson Parade, the
Terryville Fire Department was called out to a reported house fire on Tom
Court. Brookhaven Town Fire Marshal Chris Mount was first to arrive on scene
and advised incoming units that they had a fully involved house fire. The
homeowner smelled smoke, but could not find a reason for it and returned to
bed. Fortunately he was able to escape the intense smoke and flames that
soon followed.
Chief Tim Bonacum instructed Engine Company One to secure a hydrant and to
stretch a two-and-a-half-inch hand line to battle the volcano like blaze.
Operations Chief Bill Wesley and Keith Olsen instructed Engine Companies
Two, Three, and 12 to stretch additional lines and to perform truck
operations.
Firefighters were successfully able to knock down the intense flames, while
maintaining an interior attack on the fire. Once the flames were knocked
down, the Port Jefferson Fire Department, the Mount Sinai Fire Department,
and the Setauket Fire Department completed the task of fully extinguishing
the fire. Due to high temperatures and high humidity, crews were rotated to
prevent exhaustion.
The Terryville Fire Department EMS crew evaluated and rehabbed all of the
firefighters as they finished their operation. After a complete overhaul,
firefighters returned home for a quick shower, put on their class B
uniforms, and proceeded to march in the Port Jefferson Parade.
